The Season of Advent

Here it is -the season of Advent! I am loving our Christmas school that we have been doing along with our daily Advent readings. Sugar cookies, warm tea, candles lit, and good books have all made for a special December!

Our family has used several Advent books during December since the children were younger.

Here are a few:

While simple, we have used this one the most often and the book goes with homemade ornaments.
I have used this one individually.
I haven’t used this as a family yet. I have been reading it individually.

I tried something new last year that began with a Hot Cocoa party to anticipate the beginning of Advent.

We are using Ann Voskamp’s book, The Wonder of the Greatest Gift.

You can print the Hot Cocoa kit Here.

I simply printed, cut, strung the banner, bought a battery operated string of lights, then stored it all in a gallon size baggy and placed it inside our Christmas containers that I store in the attic.

When the night before Advent rolled around this year I invited our neighbors, set up a table with the Hot Cocoa items, hung the banner, picked up a few helium balloons, and wrapped a simple ornament (from Dollar General 😉) for each child as a memory from the night.

Lastly, I placed a bowl of Trader Joe’s Ginger Snaps and we were ready to go!

Here is Webster’s definition of advent:

“Advent, (from Latin adventus, “coming”), in the Christian church calendar, the period of preparation for the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ at Christmas and also of preparation for the Second Coming of Christ.”

What about you? Do you have an Advent book that you use with your family or one you read on your own? If so, we would love to know about it!

Happy Advent Season! 🌲
